Week #5 ODNC – It's Time to Build
Hi, I’m Kavir! Here's recapping Week #5 of ODNC1. We’re already halfway through 😢
If you're new here, I’ll be chronicling the 10 weeks of ODNC1 with key takeaways of events, noteworthy quotes, and my perspective while I build in public. Subscribe to get updates:
We didn’t have fireside chats this week, but our consciousness was taken over by the highly anticipated, Global Build Weekend. This was the first instance of cross-program collaboration across fellowships of Founders, Writers, Podcasters, No-code, and First-50.
It’s this cross-program collaboration that can foster immense value creation for the entire alumni network.
I wrote about how business schools could emulate a build weekend and foster a lot of new connections and create value.
The final pitches of the Build Weekend were so good that I had to watch Robbie Crabtree's session recording on ‘How to Deliver a Pitch’. Here are 3 takeaways from it:
Robbie Crabtree
Robbie is the Program Director of On Deck's Performative Speaking program.
Hook your audience with imagery
"Imagine that COVID is over tomorrow and you finally get to that favorite restaurant with your friends, grab that glass of wine, and order your favorite meal. It's as if it never happened. The nightmare is over."
I'm sure that after reading this sentence, you actually pictured the scene. Imagery is powerful. And it can hook your audience to your messaging. Imagery works both while speaking as well as writing, and it's been a constant endeavor of mine to elicit that response in my readers.
Build a narrative
"We need to take the listener on a journey where they are doing things like shaking their heads, or having a moment like ‘I hadn't thought of that’."
You should be able to tie it in the story arc. I wrote a piece on Storytelling in Product Demos that is similar to this.
How to do it?
Purpose: Problem and solution
Passion: Your team and why you can succeed
Potential: Your vision moving forward and the opportunity
The way Robbie put it was great — it's a way of stacking credibility. Don’t put your ask at the front. Stack it up by building empathy in the minds of the people, establishing evidence for you and your team's claim, and then ending with the vision and ask.
My Global Build Weekend Project
Climate change is the biggest problem facing humanity at the moment. In order for our planet to survive, we need to limit warming to 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) which would require near-zero emissions by 2050.
This is also possible if financial incentives align with climate metrics. Fortunately, there is a turning of the tide.
“We know that climate risk is investment risk. But we also believe the climate transition presents a historic investment opportunity. “ - Larry Fink BlackRock CEO (AUM $8.7T)
The problem we were trying to solve is that most companies publish their ESG metrics in different ratings. There is no one accepted rating.
We are building a platform that will aggregate ratings from multiple sources, weigh them, and provide one score that can be used by institutional investors to make investment decisions.
The key challenge was to get APIs that would help us populate this data, which we were able to overcome.
The future opportunity is to get models validated by industry experts and distribute this resource to investors.
